Q & A Fridays with NPS on Instagram | Northwest DC Photographer

Q & A with a Northwest DC Newborn Photographer

What are Q & A Fridays?

Did you know I do Q & A Fridays over on Instagram every week? I do! Every single Friday I pop on IG Stories and answer the questions you ask me the day before.

And they aren’t all about photography, my business or my sessions. Not at all! I answer anything. Questions about travel, my boys, my favorite coffee – you name it, I answer it!

So, as a Northwest DC photographer, I thought I’d do a little Q & A round up on the blog. Here are some of the questions I’ve answered in the past six months. Here it goes!

Q: Why did you switch to Lifestyle Sessions in 2020?

A: I like to think I pivoted before pivoting was even a thing! Basically when my husband took a job in the DC area (we were in NC for 11 + years), I knew I had to change things up. I had also been photographing posed newborns since 2013 and I was ready for a change! And Lifestyle Photography was the PERFECT fit. Now, I go to clients’ homes and capture my sweet clients authentically in the place they are most comfortable.

I made this decision in early 2019, but wanted to give myself time to learn and grow as a photographer before I made a total switch. And that’s just what I did!

Northwest DC Family Photographer - What to Wear

Q: Any color ideas for outdoor family photo?

A: Don’t “match” instead coordinate! Think layers, textures and patterns. Gone are the days of everyone wearing white shirts and khakis or jeans – thank goodness!!! I always recommend starting with mom and working off what she’s wearing.

Stay away from black and neon colors and make sure you can MOVE! No tight dresses or super short skirts please. Take a look at my Pinterest Board for some inspiration!

Q: What camera do you use?

A: I shoot Nikon. I currently use a D750 – a full frame camera. And I actually have two of them! See all my gear HERE.

Q: Do you edit in Lightroom or Photoshop?

A: BOTH! I actually do the majority of editing in Lightroom and sometimes tweak a bit in Photoshop.

Q: What’s the best time of day for in-home family sessions?

A: Depends on the light in your home! And nap schedules. Because we want happy, well fed kids – so we will discuss the light and your kids’ schedules.

Recent Q & A’s – Personal

Q: Favorite color?

A: Navy (and pink)

Q: Would you rather be 10 minutes early or 10 minutes late?

A: EARLY – every single time!

Q: Favorite vacation spots?

A: In the US, 30-A on the Panhandle of FL and NYC. I LOVE to travel and explore new places. So many places I want to go – hopefully in 2021!

Q: Favorite children’s book?

A: The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein
