Best Restaurants in Georgetown for Families

When talking about the top attractions in Georgetown, we can’t skip over the food. This neighborhood is packed with family-friendly restaurants that not only serve delicious food but also offer a welcoming vibe for families.

La Bonne Vache

One of my favorite local spots is La Bonne Vache, a French-inspired eatery that delivers on both flavor and charm. The cozy setting is ideal for a family meal, and the fact that no reservations are needed makes it even more perfect when you’re out and about with little ones.

Martin’s Tavern

Next up, there’s Martin’s Tavern, a historic gem that holds a special place in Georgetown’s legacy—it’s where JFK proposed to Jackie, after all. Beyond its significance, it’s also simply an excellent spot to enjoy hearty, comforting food in a warm, inviting space that welcomes families with open arms.

Baked & Wired

For a sweet treat, Baked & Wired is a must. Known for its scrumptious cupcakes, it’s a fun and tasty stop that will delight kids and adults alike. I always recommend trying the seasonal flavors—my personal favorite is the Smurfette, a delightful mix of lemon and blueberry.

Historic Attractions in Georgetown

Georgetown’s charm lies in its rich history, which is beautifully preserved in some of the neighborhood’s most treasured sites. There are so many historic attractions in Georgetown are perfect for curious young minds and adults alike, but here are two of my absolute favorites.

Tudor Place

Tudor Place is one of the most iconic attractions in Georgetown. This Georgetown landmark preserves the stories of six generations of descendants of Martha Washington as well as the enslaved and free people who worked there for nearly two centuries. Your family can tour the house and explore the beautiful gardens on your own.

Dumbarton Oaks

Another must-see attraction in Georgetown is Dumbarton Oaks, a hidden treasure that combines art, architecture, and nature. While parents may appreciate the Byzantine and Pre-Columbian art collections, children will be love strolling by the stunning gardens. There’s something magical about wandering through the pathways, discovering fountains, statues, and quiet corners along the way, don’t you agree?

Scenic Spots and Outdoor Attractions in Georgetown

One of the joys of living and working in this part of D.C. is how accessible nature feels even in the city. Georgetown and the surrounding area are full of gorgeous outdoor attractions that are perfect for family outings.

The Washington National Cathedral & Bishop’s Garden

Although not in Georgetown proper, The Washington National Cathedral & Bishop’s Garden is one of my favorite places to visit. The gardens are peaceful, the gift shop is delightful, and Open City Cafe on the grounds is an excellent spot for coffee or a bite to eat. Fun fact: my husband Mark proposed to me right outside the Cathedral!

Roosevelt Island

Roosevelt Island is just a short drive or walk from Georgetown. This 88.5-acre island in the Potomac River is a hidden gem. It’s ideal for a light family hike and learning about the legacy of Theodore Roosevelt. The trails are stroller-friendly, and the views of D.C. are incredible.

The C&O Canal Towpath

The C&O Canal Towpath begins right in Georgetown, and is a favorite for local families. It’s perfect for a casual stroll or bike ride with your little ones. The historic canal boats are also a must-see!

Iconic Washington, D.C. Attractions Near Georgetown

You don’t have to venture far from Georgetown to experience some of the most iconic attractions in the nation’s capital. These nearby destinations are great for family adventures and are easy to incorporate into a day out. Here are a few more to consider on your visit!

The Lincoln Memorial

The Lincoln Memorial is always a powerful sight to behold. For an unforgettable experience, visit at sunrise when the light is golden and the crowds are minimal. Children love climbing the wide steps, and the view from the top is truly special.

National Mall

Just beyond Georgetown lies the expansive National Mall. This central strip stretches from the Capitol Building to the Lincoln Memorial and is flanked by some of the best museums in the country. It’s stroller-friendly and full of open space for kids to run, making it an excellent stop for families looking to blend education with play.

Best Kid-Friendly Museums in Washington, D.C.

Let’s talk about indoor fun. When the weather isn’t cooperating (hello, D.C. humidity or sudden downpours), these museums are excellent options.

National Postal Museum
This museum is often overlooked, but it’s a gem. Interactive exhibits keep little ones engaged, and there’s a fun area for kids to design their own stamps.

National Building Museum
From giant LEGO installations to creative play zones, this is a favorite for curious kids who love to build, touch, and explore.

Phillips Collection
For art-loving families, this intimate museum offers a quiet space to enjoy beautiful works without the overwhelming crowds of larger galleries.

Seasonal Family Attractions in the D.C. Area

Some of the best attractions in Georgetown and the surrounding area are seasonal—so be sure to take advantage of what each time of year offers!

Gravelly Point Park
Pack a picnic and bring a blanket! This park is located right next to Reagan National Airport, so you can watch planes fly overhead while lounging in the grass. Kids absolutely love it.

Yards Park Fountain
During the summer months, this spot is ideal for cooling off. The splash-friendly fountain and wide open green space make it a family go-to.

Georgetown Glow
In the winter, don’t miss this outdoor light art installation. It’s an evening stroll full of wonder, and one of the most unique seasonal attractions in Georgetown.
