When’s the best time for newborn pictures?

When you bring your baby home from the hospital, it can be a whirlwind of change and excitement. Trust me, as a fellow mama, I know how chaotic it is at first! It’s hard to see beyond the pile of diapers or to think about anything other than their needs while wondering when you’ll sleep again (which you will). But I promise this season is fleeting. And a newborn lifestyle session can help you savor all of these special little moments with your family!

Now, you’re probably wondering when’s the best time is to photograph a newborn. Take a deep breath, mama. Let me put your mind at ease with how easy it is to plan your newborn session with me. And I will capture your cherished memories to last a lifetime.

How early do I need to schedule my newborn session?

Not everyone realizes it, but a baby is considered a newborn until they’re about two months old. Because it’s a short window of time, I encourage moms-to-be to book with me before the baby arrives. Knowing your due date is on my calendar before the baby arrives alleviates the stress of trying to coordinate when you’re just home from the hospital and exhausted! It also gives you something fun to look forward to as a family!

And, honestly, after your baby is born, you will realize how time flies by. You’ll notice so many changes in those first months of life that you’ll want to make time stand still! And that’s where I come in.

While I recommend doing your session between two and four weeks after they have arrived, a newborn lifestyle session can be done anytime during the first two months. I know what you’re thinking – babies are so alert at two months! Don’t worry – that’s what a swaddle is for! Swaddles are my magic weapon of sorts! Not only does it keep the baby from startling and flailing, but a good swaddle can soothe your baby and keep them comfortable. To tell you the truth, I’m obsessed with snapping shots of your bundle of joy all snuggled up and cozy!

When’s the best time of the day for a newborn lifestyle session?

Many moms-to-be ask when’s the best time of day is to photograph their newborn. My answer? There really isn’t a bad time of day. Adjusting to life with a new little one may feel overwhelming, so I always recommend picking a time that works best for you and your family. You might want extra time in the morning to get yourself ready and to make sure everyone is fed and happy. Or we might need o schedule around a sibling’s nap or school schedule. And that’s not a problem! I’m more than happy to work with you to find the best time for your session.

As a side note, we definitely want to do your session when your house is it’s brightest! So, please keep that in mind.

At the end of the day, there’s nothing cuter than those chubby cheeks, tiny fingers, and hair swirls. Honestly, I love highlighting the unscripted, tug at your heartstrings kind of details.

I use natural, baby-led posing to photograph real moments and movements. So, there’s no need to worry about timing your baby’s naps around the session. No matter if your new addition is awake or asleep, this time is all about them and inspiring those spontaneous shots!
