Picture this: your sweet little baby was born a couple of weeks ago, and as you hold that newborn in your arms, you take stock of everything the past few weeks has involved.
From childbirth and meeting your little one for the first time to feeding, diaper changes, swaddling, and trying so hard to decipher what each and every cry means, you’ve barely had a moment to acknowledge anything outside of the newborn haze you’re living in.
Your hormones are on overdrive, and as the laundry piles up and thoughtful messages from your friends go unanswered, you feel overwhelmed, disappointed, and emotional as you think, “I’ve missed the perfect window for newborn photos!”
Busting the Myth
Mama, let me reassure you: there’s no such thing as “the perfect window” for scheduling photos of your new baby! Let’s bust that myth together, shall we?
- All ages and stages of your child’s life are perfect to capture.
While it may seem like everyone schedules newborn photography sessions or only asks to see photos of your child as a newborn, here’s what is true: every milestone and moment throughout your baby’s first year is worth capturing, and there’s no such thing as waiting too long to capture your baby’s current age or stage!
The old adage that your baby will never be as little as they are today is certainly true, but let that empower you, not discourage you, from scheduling a photography session when it works for you and your child. It’s always the right time to preserve your baby’s milestones as they grow, change, and develop during their first year!
- Your older baby is full of personality (and smiles!), which makes for adorable photos.
It’s no surprise that as babies grow, they start to show more personality. This is one of my favorite reasons to wait a little while before scheduling a photography session, because we can capture your little one’s unique characteristics and expressions!
In addition, babies start to smile between three and four months of age, making this a fun stage to capture in photographs.
- When you wait to schedule a newborn photography session until your baby is a bit older, your child is more alert and more filled-out (and even chubby!), and you as a Mom are feeling more like yourself.
One more benefit of scheduling a newborn session when your baby is a bit older is that your child becomes more alert and responsive once “the fourth trimester” passes (around 3 months of age). This can help your baby engage more in the photo session and makes it easy for me to capture you as you interact with them.
Plus, you and your baby have made it through the first few tender weeks of your postpartum journey, which often means in addition to you feeling more like yourself, your baby may be feeding and sleeping more and is likely starting to fill out or accumulate those delicious chubby rolls!

It’s Never Too Late!
Whether your baby is a few weeks or a few months old, please don’t think that it’s too late to schedule a photography session. Each age and stage of your baby’s first year comes with many unique moments that are worth capturing. From their first smiles to their curious nature and their growing confidence as they figure out the world around them, every age offers something special that’s worth documenting.
