Introducing…Six Favorite Photography Prompts for Happy Kids

mom with three kids

If you’re a photographer who works with children, this post is for you!

I’m SO excited to share a free resource with you to help you capture kids’ authentic emotions and behaviors. It’s a guide I’m calling my Six Favorite Photography Prompts for Happy Kids.

As photographers, we like to document human connection and emotion, but it’s no secret that kids can be the trickiest part of a photo session. To help you bring out the best in your littlest clients, I’ve compiled my favorite tips and tricks for prompting kiddos to move, play, and be themselves in front of my camera.

I’ve created this resource for you based on my MANY years of experience with children; if you’ve been around my corner of the Internet a while, you know that I am a former elementary school teacher turned in-home newborn and family photographer and a mom of three children (who are now grown).

Children certainly keep you on your toes as a photographer, and their personalities make every session unique. In this blog post, I’m sharing a sneak peek at two of the prompts I use to keep everyone happy and doing what I want during a session.

1. Looking for Boogers: Squirmy toddlers never like to look where you want them to…am I right? And all kids think boogers are hilarious!

So, ask a child to see if mom or dad has boogers in their nose. You’ll get a smile or laugh and the child looking up at mom or dad!

2. Smelling/Playing with Hair or Feet: Want older siblings to connect with a younger sibling? Ask them to smell or play with their feet!

Want a child to snuggle close to mom or dad? Ask them to smell their hair!

I always ask what it smells like – stinky? Sweet? Like ice-cream or pizza? Or maybe like a stinky diaper. Or how does it feel – soft or hard?

Best news ever: in addition to my top six favorite prompts for young kids, you’ll get access to my go-to prompts for older children and a BONUS video of me walking you through each prompt! Don’t wait on this freebie, photographer friends.

I hope this freebie helps you feel more confident in working with and prompting the children you’ll meet at your next session! Access the freebie here.
