So many families I photograph absolutely love the outdoors, and to be honest, so do I! I enjoy taking walks around Georgetown with our dog, Georgie, and dining al fresco is lovely when the weather is just right.
But when it comes to photography sessions, the outdoors aren’t my favorite location, simply because of the unpredictability of the weather and the bugs! But I have some ways we can incorporate the outdoors!
Your In-Home Session Can Include the Outdoors
However, that doesn’t mean that your in-home photography session can’t embrace your love of the outdoors; in fact, if you take a look at my work, you’ll see a lot of ways that I incorporate the outdoors into my photography sessions.
Favorite Ways to Use the Outdoors
Here’s a few of my favorite ways to bring in the outdoors at your in-home photography session:
- Shoot with a window in the picture to add nature and trees. Some of my favorite photographs I’ve taken feature Mom and baby tucked inside the natural frame that a window provides. No matter the time of year, the beauty of the outdoors peeks in through the window!
I also love asking toddlers and littles to hop up into the window frame for photos; their little limbs tend to fit so perfectly in the frame, and I absolutely love to watch their sense of wonder activate as they look at birds flying and chittering outside. - Bring flowers or plants indoors! I definitely appreciate a really great floral arrangement from Trader Joe’s or a client whose green thumb means they have a plethora of thriving indoor plants, so let’s incorporate them into your in-home photography session.
Consider placing your plants strategically where the natural light will hit them best, such as atop a table near the window, on a nursery dresser, or even on the kitchen counter. As your photographer, I’m always on the hunt for natural light in your home, so wherever the light streams into your home is where I’ll photograph your family, and where your plants will be the happiest, too. - Use the front or back yard at the end of a session. After we’ve captured all of the beautiful in-home photography shots that we need, it’s absolutely fine and enjoyable to take a break outside, if the weather allows…and why not do it in front of the camera! Whether your front porch has a swing that perfectly fits your family or your backyard landscaping is showing off in the warmer temps, ending your session outdoors with a little family playtime is always a good time.
Even though a photography session that’s fully outdoors isn’t in the cards if you work with me, there are many creative ways that we can incorporate the beauty of nature into your in-home photography session.
