Choosing a Newborn Photographer
You’re pregnant! Congrats!!! Now the fun part begins. Buying the gear, decorating the nursery AND choosing your newborn photographer!
So, how do you choose a professional newborn photographer?
There are a few key things you should look at when choosing the perfect photographer for your family. I hope this check list will help!
Things to keep in mind!
Past Work & Portfolio: Most photographers have portfolios or blogs on their websites. Take a look at their work and style. My personal style is simple, timeless and classic. I capture newborns at home with their family in the most authentic way. In other words, choose a newborn photographer that matches your style.
Testimonials & Reviews: Most photographer’s have ratings on Google and testimonials on their website. What do past clients have to say about their experience? Is this the type of experience you are looking for? Also, ask your friends!
Experience & Training: In my opinion, experience is the most important factor when choosing a newborn photographer. Also, look at what kind of training the photographer has with newborn sessions.
Lifestyle vs Posed: First, you need to understand the difference! I specialize in Lifestyle Photography (which means your newborn is captured in an authentic way). Lifestyle Sessions don’t involve props and are very casually posed. I typically photograph them in a onesie or simple one piece outfit and a swaddle. Lifestyle Newborn Sessions take place in your home. On the other hand, posed newborn session take place in a studio with the photographer posing the newborn and putting them in props. Usually the photographer provides all the props, wraps, hats and headbands.
Investment: Most families are on a budget. However, you are trusting a photographer with your days old baby and you want an expert not the best deal possible. Your images will be treasured for generations. A more expensive photographer usually has a lot of experience, training and is set-up as a real business – they have insurance and pay taxes.
A few more things…
In addition, here are a few other things to think about.
Are you going to want to take your brand new baby somewhere or is it easier to have the photographer come to you?
Do you want your fur babies to be part of the session?
Do you want to have that beautiful, newly decorated nursery to be included in the session?
