Looking for a Family Photographer?
There are many things to take into consideration when choosing a Washington, DC family photographer. And when you’re making an investment in family photos, you certainly want to make sure you choose wisely. While it’s tempting to jump up and down and say “pick me, pick me!” the truth of the matter is, I want you to pick the photographer that you – no pun intended – click with. If that’s me, nobody will be more elated. But there is an essential list of things to consider when choosing your family photographer.
The Essential Checklist: How to Choose the Right Photographer
- Indoor, studio or in-home photos?
The first is to consider your preferred setting; where you see your photos being done. This is really a personal preference, but please know that when you choose me we will be doing most of the session in your home with an opportunity to utilize your porch or backyard, too.
- Posed or natural photos?
If you have looked on my website or scrolled my Instagram account, you know I prefer natural photos. But there is certainly a time and place for posed, everyone-looking-at-the-camera pictures. I always try to get one picture with everyone looking at the camera (I affectionately refer to this as the “Grandma shot” because, you guessed it, these are always her favorite ones), but that isn’t my goal at your session. My ultimate goal is to capture your family’s unscripted moments.
- Overall style
Light and airy. Dark and moody. Or somewhere in-between. Whatever the aesthetic, make sure you like the photographer’s style and edits, as what they show on their website and social media feeds is going to be representative of what your final images will look like, too.
- Professional photographer or hobbyist?
There are a lot of fabulous photographers out there! But, remember experience counts. A photographer that runs a legitimate business (i.e., pays taxes, has a registered business, a polished website…) is important. I suggest doing your homework.
- Read reviews and testimonials
And speaking of homework… study up on what past clients have to say! Testimonials can tell you a lot about a photographer, and thanks to Google, reviews of the photographers you’re researching are easier to read than ever.
- Talk to the photographer
There’s no better chemistry check than a good, old fashioned phone call. This is why I do a phone consultation with every potential client before they book! You can ask all your questions and get to know me. It’s important – actually, essential – that you are comfortable with your photographer and that rapport begins to build at the initial conversation.
Am I the Right Photographer for You?
If I check all the boxes, let’s make it official! Fill out a contact form and let’s schedule a time to chat.
Why chat? A quick phone call is the best way for me to answer all your questions and walk you through a session. It also gives you the perfect chance to get to know me!
