Everything About My Newborn Session Flow | Washington, DC Photographer

Newborn Session Flow Washington DC 07 - NPS Photography

What to Expect During Your Newborn Session

When potential clients inquire about a Washington, DC in-home newborn session with me, the first questions are usually about things like what to wear, how to prep your home ready, or how long it might take to get your photos back after the session. But, do you want to know the real experience, the nitty gritty, the actual day-of newborn session flow?

Here’s everything you should know!

I’ll knock on your door, all masked up. With brand new babies in the mix, yes, I am still masking for ALL in-home newborn sessions. I’ll be carrying my trusty camera bag, which is usually stocked with two cameras, my Nikon Z6 and Nikon D750. As I’m saying hello, I’ll slip off my shoes because – you’ll soon see – I sometimes do a bit of furniture climbing to get the best shots!

I greet everyone warmly – little people and pets included. I’m a dog person, and I have a dog at home (my sweet Georgie!), so please know I am used to having dogs greet me with a sniff and maybe even a jump. With your older kids, I like to get down on their level to say hello and ask them all about the important job of being a big brother or sister. And if baby’s older sibling is a bit shy right off the bat, I will back off and let time do its job.

After the hey, hi, hellos I’ll ask you to give me a tour of your home. This allows me to scope the best areas of light. I may even turn off overhead lights or open window treatments as we walk through to allow for that clean, natural light to illuminate the space.

Let the magic begin!

And now…the magic of the photo session truly begins. I start by placing you all in the best light, which could be anywhere in the home. Once I do this, I may fix mom’s hair or dress, or adjust everyone to ensure we can see baby’s face. And then, I simply start talking to you, and snapping away. I’ll gently give you prompts, tell you where to place your hands, and if baby has older siblings, they should get ready to play some games. And don’t be surprised if we stay in one spot for a while. It’s ALL about the light, and if the light is good, we’re going to take advantage of it!

Typically sessions last about an hour. But if baby needs to be fed or needs a diaper change and things go a bit more slowly, that is 100% okay! We’ll go at baby’s pace, ensuring that all the while we capture shots of your full family, shots with mom, shots with dad, shots with both parents, sibling pictures and, of course, lots of pictures of the baby by themselves.

After the session…

As I wrap up and get ready to go, I’ll remind you that you’ll receive your slideshow of images about two weeks after the session and make sure I answer any questions you might have about the ordering process while we’re together. Because my newborn sessions take place in home, and the flow is easygoing and relaxed, the sessions always seem to fly by! Then I head home and begin the editing process to ensure you receive your keepsake images in the time frame promised.

Have more questions about the newborn session experience? I’m always available to help shed more light. Contact me and ask away.

“Natasha is an absolute gem to work with and her talent shines through her work.   With 3 young rambunctious boys, we weren’t expecting her to capture so many sweet moments with their new baby sister.  Lastly, she was so good at encouraging us to meet the needs of our littles ones during our shoot.  The entire experience was wonderful and now we have pictures we will cherish for a lifetime!”
