Siblings & Newborn Sessions do Mix!
You have a toddler and maybe a dog or two and you’re a little nervous about how your newborn session will go with all the chaos.
I understand chaos and toddlers and I’m here to tell you to take a deep breath and trust me.
Yes, It’s About the Newborn
Newborn Sessions definitely focus on the newborn. I capture their tiny fingers, their adorable feet and that little swirl their hair makes on the back of their head. I might even capture a newborn smile – my favorite! But, when there’s an older sibling, sometimes they sort-of steal the show.
And that’s ok!
It’s important for the big brother or sister to be comfortable with me. I want them to interact normally with mom and dad and be themselves. Sometimes, toddlers have a little “stranger danger” and that is normal and totally fine. I usually win them over pretty quickly. But, those shy shots are pretty incredible, too.
Sometimes a sibling wants to show me “all the things” – their new baby, their room, their favorite toy or their new outfit. Again, totally fine!
I want siblings to be comfortable with me and also to sort-of forget I’m there and just be themselves!
8 Things to Remember
Here are 8 things to remember for your newborn session when you have older siblings!
-
Your older child(ren) need some love and attention. Yes, it’s about the baby, but make a fuss over the bigs, too.
-
Let kids be kids. Someone might have a tantrum or fuss. That’s OK. It actually very normal. Just let them get it out and let me help distract them.
-
Encourage them to laugh and giggle and have fun! Ok, I might ask your kids to stand on a table or jump on a bed. Please go with it! Kids love doing “special” things and it makes for amazing pictures!
-
Have snacks on hand. Preferable dry snacks that don’t make a mess!
-
Have a few favorite toys and books close by – think timeless when you’re picking these out. Wooden toys work well!
-
Turn on some of your big kids’ favorite tunes! I’m always here for a dance party.
-
Don’t sweat the small stuff. Kids feed off your emotions. Try to relax and have fun!
-
Trust me. I have a lot of experience with kids and know how to get them to cooperate.
