All the Excuses
“My home hardly has any natural light.”
“It’s far from picture perfect.”
“This isn’t our forever home.”
Mama, I’ve heard it all. I completely understand your concerns with an in-home lifestyle photography session. Maybe that’s why you’re set on an outdoor adventure or studio experience.
But guess what? There’s beauty in capturing you and your family where you are right at this very moment: at home. And I don’t want those worries to cause you to stop documenting the real-life, authentic details. Because time doesn’t stand still for your children. Before you know it, they’ll be moving onto the next age and stage.
That’s why I’m here to share four benefits of booking a lifestyle photography session at home!
The Benefits of a In-Home Lifestyle Photography Session
1. It’s where your kids are most comfortable.
Let’s be honest. Not everyone is super comfortable in front of a camera. That’s why being in a familiar space makes it that much easier for me to capture your truest self! You and your family can be relaxed and at ease, while hanging out on your couch or lounging in the bedroom while the kids are jumping on the bed (with your permission, of course).
Despite that, you never know how your kids will behave with a virtual stranger in their home, snapping away with a camera. So, what if someone starts crying during the session? It could happen. And the good news is, they’re in their own home, so they’ll recover FAST!
For one of my clients’ children, I showed him my camera and spoke to him in a soft voice. Within a matter of minutes, he was fine and on the go, showing me his room and rocking horse, and even his favorite book and little farm. See – there are perks to having “home field advantage”! (Side note: as a family photographer, there’s more where that came from in my “bag of tricks” when I need to think on my feet!)
2. It’s easy.
There’s no doubt it can be stressful to have to not only get ready for a photography session but also pack up all the things (extra clothes, snacks, toys) and get the family out the door on time. With an in-home session, however, you get to stay put!
Phew.
Plus, thanks to your indoor location, we can typically make the most of whatever the weather forecast may be—from super sunny and humid to snow flurries (unless, of course there are dense clouds and rain, because I always need a fair amount of indoor light to work with!).
3. It offers a whole wardrobe (& distractions) at your fingertips.
Kids can be messy and clumsy. That’s okay, though! If someone spills or spits up, you have a whole wardrobe on hand for a quick change to get you back into photo-ready mode.
Need something to put a smile on your little one’s face (or keep them occupied)? Surprise! You have all their favorite things on hand—whether it’s a stuffed animal, train, lovey, or book. Oh, and what if they get a little hungry? No need to worry. Remember, you have a pantry full of snacks too, mama! For this in-home session, I documented the fun, sweet moments of one of my clients’ kids eating his favorite treat: donuts. It’s proof that in-home sessions can offer more room for creativity and authenticity so you can remember these special days that flash by all too fast!
4. It captures the spaces that matter most.
Sure, you may have nodded your head “yes” to any of the in-home lifestyle photography session concerns I shared at the beginning of this post. Maybe you’re renting your home right now. Or, you just haven’t gotten as “settled in” and “organized” as you’d like.
But you know what? You’re not going to get this time back. So why not document this time—right where you’re at? It doesn’t matter what it looks like because it’s what your life is like at this very moment in time.
Just give me a house, and I’ll find the spots where the light hits just right to create the backdrop for capturing genuine smiles and giggles.
