But let’s be honest, asking for those testimonials can sometimes feel a little... awkward. You might wonder: Am I being too forward? Will they feel obligated? Let’s clear something up right off the bat:Just because I spend time soaking in the desert scenery of Palm Springs and mentoring other photographers doesn’t mean I’ve stopped photographing families in Washington, DC. Not even close. DC is still home. My clients are here. My heart is here. A Quick “Hi” If We Haven’t Met Hey there, I’m Natasha! I’m a Washington DC family photographer who’s been documenting families and newborns in their real, lived-in spaces since 2013. Before that? The good news? As photographers, we can anticipate and ease those concerns through thoughtful communication and intentional client care. When it comes to reaching out to a professional photographer, most clients aren’t just thinking about dates and pricing—they’re navigating a handful of emotional hurdles, too. These hesitations often show up long before a session is booked, starting with a seemingly small (but critical) piece of your website: the contact page. Whether they’re worried about not hearing back, unsure what to expect, or overwhelmed by options, your contact page can either ease those fears or add to them. The good news? As photographers, we can intentionally design our contact page to serve and support potential clients from the very beginning. In this post, we’ll break down the key components that make a contact page not just functional, but client-centered. Hi, I’m Natasha with NPS Photography! The answer might be sooner than you think—but the good news is, a little planning now leads to a calm, stress-free photo experience later. I Planning for a new baby brings all kinds of excitement—and just as many to-dos. One important task that often gets overlooked is knowing when to book a newborn photographer. If you're hoping for a summer newborn session, the answer might surprise you. Somewhere between nursery prep and creating your baby registry, it's worth giving this some early thought. Hi, I’m Natasha, owner of NPS Photography. I’ve photographed hundreds of newborns and families across the D. C. area, and trust me when I say that timing really matters. Booking your photographer early helps everything feel easier—especially during those whirlwind first weeks with a new baby. The good news? With just a little planning, your summer newborn session can be relaxed, meaningful, and beautifully captured. So let’s break down exactly when to book a newborn photographer—and why it matters more than you might think! Newborn Photography Works Best When It’s Booked in Advance Here’s the truth: the best time to book your newborn photographer is before your baby arrives. Early planning gives you plenty of time to get to know your photographer, plan your session style, and ensure your due date is held on their calendar. When you book in advance, you also have the opportunity to ask questions, explore your options, and build trust with your photographer. That connection makes a big difference when it’s time to step in front of the camera with your brand-new baby. Newborn photography is more than just snapping cute baby pics. Learn why luxury family photographer pricing isn’t the problem — and how to build a client experience that backs it up. Hi, I’m Natasha — a Washington, DC-based in-home family photographer and educator helping photographers build sustainable businesses with heart. After more than a decade of documenting families and mentoring creatives, I’ve seen one struggle come up again and again: pricing. Not the numbers — the mindset. Because pricing is part of every photography business – whether you do in-person sales, all inclusive a session fee + package or collection or something else that works for your business. So today, I’m sharing a hot take (with love): Luxury family photographer pricing: your client’s budget is not your responsibility. If you’ve ever felt guilty quoting your rates or tempted to shrink your pricing just to book the job, this post is for you. Let’s get one thing straight: You are not your client’s budget advisor. You’re not their financial planner. And you’re definitely not responsible for managing their money. But you are a creative business owner. And if you’re a family photographer who’s ever lowered your prices out of guilt, offered discounts before they were asked for, or spiraled after hitting “send” on a pricing guide — I wrote this for you. “No One Asks Restoration Hardware to Justify a $5,000 Dining Table” Imagine walking into Restoration Hardware and saying: “Hey, this table is stunning and all, but $5,000 feels like a lot. Could you knock off a few thousand? ” You’d get a kind smile and maybe a catalog — not a discount. So why are photographers bending over backwards to... --- > A client once sent me a 12-slide PowerPoint of inspo—and it completely changed how I approach session prep for photographers. Learn the 3 simple shifts I made to create a calm, confident client experience from inquiry to delivery. I’ll never forget the day a newborn client sent me a 12-slide PowerPoint filled with inspiration images for her upcoming session. At first? I was annoyed. She had screenshots from Pinterest, photos from other photographers, and detailed notes on what she did and didn’t want. My gut reaction was, “Doesn’t she trust me? Why did she feel the need to do this much? ” But after a few deep breaths (and maybe a walk around the block), I realized something important—and it completely changed the way I approach session prep. The Real Reason Behind the PowerPoint This client wasn’t trying to take over. She was trying to feel prepared. She was a tired new mom with a toddler at home, and she’d just booked a luxury in-home session. She wanted beautiful, meaningful photos—but she wasn’t sure I knew what she envisioned. So she did what many overwhelmed people do when they don’t feel fully supported: she over-prepared. That PowerPoint? It wasn’t about micromanaging me. It was a sign that my process wasn’t giving her enough clarity or confidence. That realization was a game-changer—and it’s exactly why thoughtful session prep for photographers can’t be an afterthought. Session Prep Isn’t Just About Logistics Before this moment, my prep process was... fine. I had a welcome guide. I sent a couple of reminder emails. But it lacked structure. It lacked intentional touchpoints. And clearly, it left too much room for anxiety to creep in. So I went back to the drawing board and... --- > Real smiles don’t need bribes. If you're planning a session and want it to be a success, it all starts with a few key family photo shoot tips. We’ve all seen the Pinterest-perfect family photos with everyone smiling sweetly in coordinated outfits—and we’ve also probably been the parent sweating behind the scenes, trying to make that happen. If you've ever wondered why your kids turn into wild cards the moment a camera appears, you're not alone. But here’s the good news: there’s a better way. Hi! I’m Natasha from NPS Photography, and after photographing hundreds of families across the D. C. area, I’ve learned that getting joyful, natural photos of your kids doesn’t require bribes or threats. It just takes a fresh mindset and a few simple strategies. So today, I’m sharing my go-to family photo shoot tips to help you ditch the pressure and enjoy a session full of genuine connection (and yes, laughter! ). Let Go of the Idea of the "Perfect" Photo The first and most important tip? Release the need for perfection. Kids are kids. They wiggle, they wander, and sometimes they meltdown. And that’s okay! The beauty of a family photo session is capturing your family as they are, not as you think they should be. Real moments—like a toddler clinging to your leg or a spontaneous family giggle—are what you’ll treasure most years from now. Client experience doesn’t have to be complicated or particularly grand; in fact, the best client experiences are often the most simple, in that they prioritize communication and care. The client experience you provide your clients is so much more than pretty photos! I learned early on in my photography business that as photographers, we are often invited into a client’s family (and for those of us who are in-home photographers, into their homes). Just like you would remove your muddy boots before walking into a stranger’s home, out of care and concern for their space, the way that you guide your clients through the experience of working with you should demonstrate that same level of focus and attention. Today’s post is a personal one, and I’m so excited to share with you what I’ve learned this year about dressing in a way that helps me feel confident. I’ve always enjoyed shopping and fashion, and I’ve never met a dress I didn’t like, so it’s fun for me to explore new ways to approach shopping for myself and styling my favorite outfits. Leveling Up This past year, I’ve leveled up my fashion game in two meaningful ways, and in addition to learning that my style “season” is winter, I now know what colors look best on my body and the most flattering cuts of clothing to wear for my body type. Because personal style and clothing choices are also important when dressing yourself and your family for a photography experience, I figured this would be a helpful post to use as inspiration for your next session, too! Let’s dive into two investments I’ve made to help me embrace my personal style. Personal Style Resources Getting My Colors Done by House of Colour Getting my colors done by House of Colour was such a fun experience! My consultant used a variety of drapes in different shades and tones of colors to help determine what colors look best with my skin tone, and it was fascinating to learn how much of a difference wearing colors that compliment your coloring makes! Another perk of the color analysis was realizing that when I wear colors in my “season” (I’m a sprinter winter! ),... --- - Published: 2024-12-11 - Modified: 2024-12-11 - URL: https://npsphotography.com/blog/lets-bust-a-myth-its-never-too-late-for-newborn-photography/ - Categories: Blog, Arlington newborn photographer, In-Home Newborn Photography Don't listen to the people who say a newborn session needs to be done in the first two weeks. It's never too late for newborn photography! Picture this: your sweet little baby was born a couple of weeks ago, and as you hold that newborn in your arms, you take stock of everything the past few weeks has involved. From childbirth and meeting your little one for the first time to feeding, diaper changes, swaddling, and trying so hard to decipher what each and every cry means, you’ve barely had a moment to acknowledge anything outside of the newborn haze you’re living in. Your hormones are on overdrive, and as the laundry piles up and thoughtful messages from your friends go unanswered, you feel overwhelmed, disappointed, and emotional as you think, “I’ve missed the perfect window for newborn photos! ” Busting the Myth Mama, let me reassure you: there’s no such thing as “the perfect window” for scheduling photos of your new baby! Let’s bust that myth together, shall we? All ages and stages of your child’s life are perfect to capture. While it may seem like everyone schedules newborn photography sessions or only asks to see photos of your child as a newborn, here’s what is true: every milestone and moment throughout your baby’s first year is worth capturing, and there’s no such thing as waiting too long to capture your baby’s current age or stage! The old adage that your baby will never be as little as they are today is certainly true, but let that empower you, not discourage you, from scheduling a photography session when it works for you and your child.... --- > We can include the outdoors in your in-home family photos and it's easier than you may think! So many families I photograph absolutely love the outdoors, and to be honest, so do I! I enjoy taking walks around Georgetown with our dog, Georgie, and dining outside is lovely when the weather is just right – fall and spring are perfect. But when it comes to in-home family photos, the outdoors aren’t my favorite location, simply because of the unpredictability of the weather (too hot or too cold! ) and the bugs. But I have some ways we can include the outdoors in your in-home family photos! But, first, I'm Natasha of NPS Photography. I'm a Washington, DC area family and newborn photographer who specializes in photographing your family where you are most comfortable - your home. Your In-Home Photos Can Include the Outdoors However, that doesn’t mean that your in-home family photos can’t embrace your love of the outdoors; in fact, if you take a look at my work, you’ll see a lot of ways that I incorporate the outdoors into my photography sessions. No need to stress! Here are some tips, inspiration and even links! As an in-home lifestyle photographer, one of my absolute favorite things about working with a client’s family is helping them plan outfits! Whether you’re planning a family photography session in Washington, D. C. or you’ve recently welcomed a new baby and want to capture this special time, it’s important to me to capture the entire family, regardless of the type of session that you’ve booked. After all, your life is lived together, and what better way to showcase that than to document the way your older children cuddle your newborn or remember how you and your daughter both share the same sweet nose! ? I want to capture family connections and interactions that are genuine and unique to you, and when I’m photographing your family, it’s a priority for me that everyone’s outfits are classic styles and coordinate well together – reflecting each family member’s personal style. I recognize that it’s not easy to combine everyone’s individual clothing preferences (especially if your daughter isn’t a dress person or your son only wants to wear athletic clothing! ) into one cohesive whole for a photography session. While some families have a good grasp on what they’ll wear to their photography session, more and more clients are taking advantage of my complimentary styling assistance. I absolutely love helping my clients select outfits to wear for their session, especially since so many of my clients are busy parents who are pressed for time or who may feel overwhelmed about dressing the entire family.... --- - Published: 2024-07-08 - Modified: 2024-08-02 - URL: https://npsphotography.com/blog/10-current-favorite-things/ - Categories: Blog, Georgetown, Products I'm sharing my 10 current favorite things on the blog! So many benefits – I love to meditate during my 45 minute sessions. Buccal facials at Take Care in Georgetown. Ok, this one might seem a little strange, but the difference in my skin is WOW! I go to Erin and highly recommend her! More skincare because I'm 51 and all about taking care of my skin! The Clarin Cryo-Flash Face Mask is fabulous. I use it 1-2x a week and am loving the results! I'm a skin cancer survivor and SPF is part of my everyday life. The Isntree Hyaluronic Acid Watery Sun Gel is excellent. Lightweight and easy to wear under makeup. Clare V. is quickly becoming my go-to place to buy bags... I'm obsessed! I recently bought this one on sale and it was the perfect travel bag for Dublin. Tost! Picture this: you’ve booked a mini session to capture your annual family photos. You know that your time in front of the camera is short (15-minute sessions don’t leave much wiggle room! ), so you get everything organized the night before, from outfits and shoes to hair bows. Everything is flowing well as you and your family get ready, but when you arrive at the session location, your children have fallen asleep in the car, your baby has a meltdown, and the dress you painstakingly steamed is now wrinkled. Here’s the truth: the word “relaxed” is never used in the same sentence as “mini session. ” I don’t offer (and actually hate! ) the typical “mini sessions” so that my clients don’t have to feel this way: rushed, overwhelmed, disorganized, and stressed. Let me be the one to tell you: when you only have 15 minutes of time to capture photos (and another client waiting in the wings for their mini session, which starts right after yours ends! ), those feelings of overwhelm, discomfort, and stress often show up on your faces in the photos, and no one – including your photographer! – wants that. Here are a few more reasons why I don’t recommend (and don’t offer typical) mini sessions: Kids can’t just be kids. Because mini sessions are so tight in terms of time, there’s no room for children to warm up to the photographer, to settle down if big emotions are at play, to share little details... --- - Published: 2024-07-07 - Modified: 2024-07-07 - URL: https://npsphotography.com/blog/where-to-shop-for-your-photography-session/ - Categories: Bethesda, Bethesda Newborn Photography, Chevy Chase, Chevy Chase Newborn Photography A new FREEBIE from NPS! A blur. When I think back to mothering littles, blur best describes it. Motherhood is a jumble of emotions that change from one second to the next and at times feels like an out of body experience. Black and white images are always raw with emotions to me. You strip away the color and are left with expressions and feelings. My Blur of Motherhood Project marries these two – black and white images that show the blur (emotionally and visually with motion blur). Over 30 moms applied for the DC Blur of Motherhood project... so honored! And I chose 7 moms based on their applications and the thoughtfulness of their answers to the questions. Instead, the photos I’m drawn to as a photographer are the moments where real expressions take center stage – even if those emotions feature a crying baby, a grumpy or shy toddler, or a Mama’s attempts to soothe her out-of-sorts child. Yes, of course, I also love capturing moments of joy and love, from a toddler hugging Dad’s legs to an exchange of genuine smiles. But to me, there’s no greater responsibility as a lifestyle photographer than to beautifully capture the range of emotions that you see and experience as parents. Capturing YOUR Authentic Connections That’s why I often prompt my clients to position themselves a certain way and then allow the moment to unfold – or fall apart – naturally! So when I ask you to keep looking at your partner, or to lean in close, or to smile even (especially) when things feel like they’re going off the rails, I am doing it for a reason. Trust that I know what I’m doing, and I promise your final images will reinforce why you had no reason to doubt.   Capturing authentic connections – both in terms of your connection to each other as a family and in terms of the raw tenderness that’s conveyed through the images themselves – is one of my favorite parts... --- - Published: 2024-04-02 - Modified: 2024-04-02 - URL: https://npsphotography.com/blog/why-lifestyle-photography-works-best-in-your-home/ - Categories: Blog, Bethesda, Bethesda Family Photography Lifestyle photography works best in your home. And here's why! When it comes to family photography, there are typically two approaches: posed portraits and lifestyle photography. And while both have their place and their purpose, my favorite style to shoot, lifestyle photography, allows your family to be themselves and share real emotions, authentic smiles, and real-life movement, from snuggles and hugs to dance parties and giggles. Lifestyle photography is perfect for showcasing what makes your family yours, and to me, there’s no better setting to capture that authenticity than at home! Picture This Consider this: if I were to arrive in your home and prompt your family to sit together on the couch, backs straight and eyes at the camera, wouldn’t that feel and look out of place, given how comfortable your family feels at home? Now, picture me (your photographer) coming in and utilizing all the levels on the couch and maybe asking a child to jump on it! Which feels more accurate? What EVERY Client Thinks Clients and clients-to-be often comment on how bright and “perfect” all of the homes look in my photographs, and as many of my family clients will tell you, their home, too, has the typical “mess” of life, from laundry baskets and toys to mail and car keys. These normal, everyday “messes” are NOT the focus of your family session – YOU are! What matters most is not what your home looks like, but that you and your loved ones feel comfortable in front of my camera, and that is most likely to... --- - Published: 2024-03-01 - Modified: 2024-03-01 - URL: https://npsphotography.com/blog/announcing-spring-2024-motherhood-sessions/ - Categories: Blog, DC, Georgetown, Motherhood Listen up Mom - GET IN THE PHOTOS! Spring 2024 Motherhood Sessions are the perfect way to do just that! Let me guess: if you’re a mama to young kids, your life can feel like a blur.   Before you know it, lost pacifiers and first words give way to preschool programs and the carpool hustle, and in the midst of all of the bustle and to-dos, you look around and think, “I hope that one day, my kids remember the mom I am today. ” If you’re nodding your head as you read this, I’m sharing one special way to make sure this happens: schedule an in-studio Spring 2024 Motherhood Session with me this spring! As a mom myself to three grown children, one of my biggest regrets is that I was so often the one snapping the photographs, so there are very few photos of me inside the frame, enjoying my kids. I wish I had captured the core memories of my boys as little ones when they still thought it was cool to hold my hand, to snuggle up and hug my neck, and to have tickle battles to see whose laugh was the biggest! This is the reason why I focus so much, both in my personal photography projects and in my photography services, on capturing you and your children in whatever stage of motherhood you’re currently in. If this sounds like memories you want to have today and cherish tomorrow, let me share more details with you about this spring’s Motherhood Sessions! As a photographer for 10+ years, there’s one thing I will never stop doing... investing in photography education. Whether it was a group coaching program, a conference, a course, or a 1:1 photography mentoring, some of the biggest gains in my business have come about as a result of learning from others. Continuing education makes me push myself to learn new things and make more meaningful art for myself and my clients. I’ve learned everything from new lighting and fresh posing prompts to best practices for blogging and running a sustainable photography business. While nothing is better than in-person education, I’ve also experienced game-changing growth in my work and in my business through online mentoring and courses. That’s why I’m so excited to offer mentoring for photographers that includes a session/gallery review, a guide that walks you through how I prep for sessions and a 30 minute Zoom with me! This experience is for photographers who are eager to hone their craft and level up their work! Session/Gallery Review Photography Mentoring: The Details If you’re looking for an opportunity to dip your toes into 1:1 mentoring with me to see if we’re a good fit to work together more extensively, Session/Gallery Review mentoring is a great first step! The truth behind why kiddos always steal the show for me? They change so darn fast! And as a mama to three grown children myself, I know that all too well, and it’s my mission as a photographer to help you remember what your sweet son looked like before he lost that first tooth, or that well-loved dress your daughter insisted on wearing every day when she turned four. No, I'm a word of the year kind of gal! Here's my 2024 word. I've done resolutions. Actually, I haven't "done" them because usually by week two, I'm no longer sticking to them. I've done and still do goals. These usually have to do with my business and I've had great success with them! In 2018, I started doing a word of the year. It's usually a word that can be used a lot of different ways and influence my life in many ways, too. My 2024 Word of the Year is... A B U N D A N C E. Now, I know what you're thinking. "That's such a buzz word! " "Everyone talks about abundance. " But, hear me out. To me abundance means infinite. Infinite time, understanding, patience, love. It's meant to remind me to S L O W D O W N. Yes, I know a lot of people use abundance to discuss profits or resources, but that's not how I intend to use it. I mean if an abundance of money comes my way, I certainly won't turn it down, but it's not my goal. ABUNDANCE means a very large quantity of something (ie. time, patience, understanding). My 2023 word was C O N N E C T and I tried to connect with people every chance I got. The genius thing about a word is you can't fail. It's supposed to be a positive in every sense of the "word" (no pun intended). So, are you team word or resolution? --- - Published: 2024-01-03 - Modified: 2024-01-03 - URL: https://npsphotography.com/blog/review-of-2023-nps-photography/ - Categories: Blog, Business, DC family photography, DC Newborn Photography, Education A review of 2023 and a little more info on what's on the horizon for NPS Photography in 2024! Pretty sure I say this every single year, "How is it (insert year)! ? " But, seriously, how is it 2024? 2023 was a year of growth for NPS Photography. I dipped my toes in mentoring and education, completed my Calm & Chaos Motherhood Project and took every opportunity to learn and grow! Favorite Moments I was BEYOND honored to teach and lead a session at Sabrina Gebhardt's Root to Rise in Washington, DC. It was an experience that pushed me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to share my process with other photographers. I also photographed four fellow photographers and their families! It's a true honor when a colleague chooses me to capture their family. I mean I may never get over Morgan Williams hiring me! Mentoring became something I offer and I've realized I love it! Five photographers hired me to help them with their business. I so enjoyed tailoring their mentoring to their needs - something they said they loved too! Sessions by the Numbers The numbers don't tell the whole story, but they certainly show where my passion lies. I'm also beyond thrilled that I'm not killing myself with sessions and making just as much money as I did before. I've really built a sustainable business that I love! And for me that means limiting my sessions and only shooting in clients' homes + the little studio space in Georgetown every once and awhile. Education In 2023, I became an educator, but I also... --- - Published: 2023-12-03 - Modified: 2023-12-03 - URL: https://npsphotography.com/blog/root-to-rise-washington-dc-edition/ - Categories: Blog, Business, In-Home Family Photography, In-Home Newborn Photography Teaching at Root to Rise was amazing and so impactful on my photography mentoring! Education for the Win Education is very important to me. I invest in education every year and Sabrina Gebhardt has been a big part of my education since 2019. I first did 1:1 mentoring with Sabrina and then that turned into masterminds, online courses and finally Root to Rise 2022 - her mastermind and retreat. So, when she asked me (yes, me! ) to teach and lead a session at the Fall 2023 Root to Rise in Washington, DC, I immediately said YES! What an honor. And the best part, I was able to participate in the mastermind, too. Root to Rise Fall 2023 Root to Rise is such a well throughout program. Not only do you grow your photography business, but I have had so much personal growth in the program. Personal growth + business growth = a program that's worth every penny! Having the retreat in my city was such a thrill! The week of the retreat I got to teach in the mastermind. I taught about how I prep for a session. I loved it! In case you didn't know, my college degree is in elementary education, so combining teaching with photography... well, that's a dream! Leading a Session I'm not going to lie, I was really nervous about leading a session with a family of 7! I don't shoot families that big often and it was a bit daunting. However, the Tanner family was an absolute dream! I treated it like any session and did a... --- - Published: 2023-11-30 - Modified: 2023-12-11 - URL: https://npsphotography.com/blog/the-blur-of-motherhood-a-nps-photography-personal-project/ - Categories: Blog, Alexandria, Arlington, Chevy Chase, DC, Motherhood, Personal - Tags: black and white photographs, dc area photographer, dc baby photographer, motherhood sessions, personal, washington dc motherhood photographer My 2024 personal project is The Blur of Motherhood and applications are open! motherhood - noun state of being a mother I brainstormed words that describe motherhood to me... love guilt intense patience unconditional beautiful soul sucking soul giving devotion selfless hard magical emotional unpredictable a blur. A blur. When I think back to mothering littles, blur best describes it. Motherhood is a jumble of emotions that change from one second to the next and at times feels like an out of body experience. I am inspired by all sorts of things! But, surrounding myself with beautiful coffee table books filled with stunning images is one of my favorite ways to find inspiration. A few of these photographers I've followed for years and some I stumbled upon. You just might find me perusing one of these books before I start sketching my ideas for a session. "But, Natasha these aren't all family photography photographers? " Correct! Inspiration can come from different types of photography. And I LOVE exploring it all - weddings, family/motherhood, headshots, women, animals. And that's what these books reflect. Books for Photography Inspiration Here are my personal favorites. Mother and Child Ok, these is a stunning book by Claiborne Swanson Frank filled with portraits of moms with kids, some are multi generational. I love reading the blurbs/interviews of all the moms, but the photographs are truly gorgeous. Women Slim Aarons was a mind blowing artist. I'm sure you've seen his photographs before. He has a number of books that showcase his work. I love the glam and the environmental shots. Seeing how photographers pose women is always an inspiration! The Perfect Imperfect John Dolan is the standard for black and white wedding photography (he does shoot color, too). His photos feel. And to capture photos that feel is a true art. And I want my clients to pay attention to these seven details before their session to ensure images you'll LOVE! Don't Forget: 7 Details to Pay Attention to at Your Photo Session! Apple watches off! In fact, just empty out your pockets. Small bows for baby girls. I love a bow, but babies are little and it's hard to see their sweet faces if they're wearing a bow that's too big. So, keep it dainty and small! Cover-up those diapers/underwear! Little girls in dresses are precious, but seeing their diapers and underwear isn't. So, please remember those diaper covers or bike shorts under dresses! Ditch the shoes and socks! I know you've heard me say this before. I'm a BIG fan of bare feet for in-home sessions. Learn more about the NPS Photography process! For about 20 months, I've been doing a little something different to prep for my in-home newborn and family sessions. It's all about the NPS Photography process! Why change what's working? Because, I'm type A and I like to plan and even more than that I always want to get better and tap into my creativity. This pre-photography session process let's me do all three! Disclaimer: I did not come up with this. I have seen other photographers so it in the past and then, I learned more about it in retreats/masterminds with Brooke Schultz and Morgan Williams. So, what is this "newer" thing for me? Sketching our 6-8 "poses" before a photography session. I'm a terrible artist, so my sketches consist of stick figures and little notes, but I understand what they mean - which is really all that matters! Now, some might say lifestyle in-home photography doesn't involve posing, but it does! I can't expect my clients to know where to stand, what to do with their hand... that's why they hired ME - Natasha Sewell! I look at it as a puzzle. Fitting people together in an interesting way. Sketch to Image Sometimes, we incorporate activities or something fun into a family photography session. And occasionally it's eating something! I have always been enamoured with black and white photos. Where My Love Began I grew-up in a home where black and white photos adorned the walls. Shelley Langston was a natural light black and white photographer based in Georgetown in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. She had a beautiful studio right on Wisconsin Avenue and specialized in mothers and children. She even used the photos she took of me in 1974 in a published photographic essay called Natasha’s Birthday. Her other books include The Child and The Mother - both of which I have acquired over the years and treasure. My parents had prints and albums of our sessions with her and I am truly blessed to have such amazing photographs from my childhood. I think those photographs spurred on my love of black and white photos. Black & White Photos Feel Black and whites highlight real emotions and have so much depth. I find myself converting my favorite images from sessions to black and white. They just speak to me! I always try to include a few black and white photos in every photo session. The Dog Days of Summer As a Washington, D. C. family and newborn photographer, I spend lots of time with children. My own three kids are grown now, but summer was always a savored season—a time to slow all the way down, stay up late, eat too much ice cream, and delight in the simple joys of childhood. It wasn’t about elaborate vacations or bucket list-level adventures. It was about chasing fireflies barefoot in the backyard. Picking wildflowers. Eating popsicles that melted faster than you could lick. The little things that somehow always end up being the big things. And even now, through the lens of my camera, I get to witness families soaking up those moments. No rush. No pressure. Just summer magic. Screen-Free Summer Fun In reminiscing on those slower, sandier, sun-soaked days, I’ve pulled together a list of screen-free activities to enjoy with your kids this summer. Think of it as a reminder that childhood doesn’t need to be curated or scheduled. Sometimes, all you need is a popsicle, a puddle, and a little imagination. While I can’t promise to stop time, I can promise this list will help you and your busy family pause and savor the season. Your Summer Simplicity List: Stay up late, catch fireflies, and watch them glow. No bedtime, no agenda—just wonder. Jump in puddles after a storm. Embrace the mess. Towels are washable. Do a backwards dinner and eat dessert first. Because life’s too short not to have cake before spaghetti.... --- > Overwhelmed in the newborn haze? Here’s why the importance of newborn photography is worth paying attention to—and why you’ll never regret documenting those early days. Newborn - noun - a recently born child that rocks your world for the better. Why the Importance of Newborn Photography Can't Be Overstated Those early newborn days are a blur, aren’t they? You’re running on very little sleep, figuring out feedings, adjusting to a new rhythm (or total lack of one), and recovering—physically and emotionally—from a life-changing event. It’s beautiful, overwhelming, and exhausting all at once. So I totally get it when parents say, “We just can’t even think about photos right now. ” But I’m here—gently, lovingly, not-so-quietly—to say: don’t skip the newborn session. Because those fuzzy, bleary, love-soaked days? They pass so much faster than anyone warns you. And the importance of newborn photography is in its power to capture a moment that disappears in a blink. Why Newborn Photography Matters So Much It’s not about Instagram. It’s not about Pinterest-perfect poses. The importance of newborn photography lies in preserving what’s real and fleeting: That flaky baby skin The way they tuck their legs under like they’re still in the womb Their grip on your finger Your partner’s bleary-eyed love The slow, sacred rhythm of life with a brand new human Newborn photos are not just for you now—they’re a gift to your child later. As a busy Washington, DC based family and newborn photographer, having my gear at the ready is a critical part of my workflow. So, I’m giving you a peek inside my bag of tricks. The Camera Bag Let’s start by talking about the bag itself. I'm sporting a black Kamrette bag these days and I’m totally obsessed with it. Even better is the fact that my sons gave it to me for Christmas (cue all the tears). They did research and ordered it from Australia. It’s the best combination of form, function and thoughtfulness from my boys that I could dream up! It holds A LOT! Up to three camera bodies, three lenses and I can even get me laptop in there. The Gear So what’s inside? I shoot Nikon and have several cameras in my bag for different styles and also as backups. The first camera I reach for is my Nikon Z6 with the lens adapter and a Sigma 35mm Art lens. I have my BLACKRAPID sling strap on it. I also have a Nikon D750 with my Nikkor 35mm lens, and a Nikon F100 film camera with a Nikkor 50mm lens.   One of my goals for 2023 is to pull out my film camera at the end of every session - it hasn't happened yet, but I'm trying! My move was somewhat gradual and I ran my business in two locations for about 18 months - something I don't recommend when you're a one-woman or man show! My gradual move gave me the ability to switch things over at a slower pace. Washington DC Newborn and Family Photographer NPS Photographer May Means One Year in DC This month marks one month of living full time in Washington, D. C. and I’m feeling reflective about all that’s come with this move. There are a few elements in my life that are still the same, and many that are quite different.   The permanent move to DC was a long time in the making. My husband, Mark, took a job in Alexandria, VA in 2019 while I stayed back at our home in Pinehurst, North Carolina as my youngest finished high school. We both commuted back and forth through the pandemic before we sold our home in NC and made the permanent move north last year. This move marks the first time I’ve lived in DC full-time in 19 years and it feels truly full circle to return to my big-city hometown. Reflecting back on this year, there are a bunch of things that remain steady. I am still a newborn and family photographer running a busy business, just with new clients and faces. My love for the theater remains a constant in my life, except that now, I’m within walking distance to the Kennedy Center. I’ve still got my trusty assistant and sidekick, my sweet dog Georgie. I still live for that small town feel, even in DC. Living here full-time has shown me that even big cities can feel like small towns. Moms are the heartbeat of my sessions, and I always want her to look and feel gorgeous. A strong image with mom holding baby is always my goal and a not-to-miss shot. I also aim to capture as much variety as possible. These shots can include mama holding the baby on her chest, mama and baby sitting or laying on a bed and cradling the baby.    Dad holding his newborn baby.  ... --- - Published: 2023-05-02 - Modified: 2024-02-24 - URL: https://npsphotography.com/blog/top-5-ways-to-prep-your-home-for-photos/ - Categories: Blog Worried about in-home family photos? Here are my top 5 ways to prep your home for photos and I promise they're painless! As a Washington, DC-based family and newborn photographer who mostly photographs ALL of my sessions in-home, I know getting your home ready for my arrival can cause a little stress. But, let me reassure you: getting your home ready for its close-up is not as hard as it sounds! In preparing hundreds of families for their photo sessions, I’ve distilled my tips down to a handy checklist of my top 5 ways to prep your home for photos. The 5 Ways to Prep Checklist Nothing to be afraid of... in the time it takes you to read this blog, you could be well on your way to completing the checklist. 1. Grab a laundry basket and fill ‘er up Despite what it sounds like, I’m not going to insist you do laundry for the session (unless what you want to wear is already in your hamper! ) On the contrary, your laundry basket is the PERFECT vessel for doing a sweep of your home and putting all of the things you don’t want in your pictures right inside that handy basket. What items do I mean? Well, it’s different for everyone, but phone chargers, alarm clocks, breast pumps, cups, remotes, even that messy stack of mail you’ve been meaning to sort - these things can translate as clutter in your photos and putting them all into your laundry basket is a quick and easy way to make a big (and clutter-free) impression. Once it’s filled, pop that basket into a... --- - Published: 2023-04-13 - Modified: 2023-06-20 - URL: https://npsphotography.com/blog/3-types-of-education-for-photographers/ - Categories: Business, Blog Education is a big YES for me and my business! Here are the 3 types of education for photographers I recommend. Education is a big YES for me! I may be 10+ years into my business, but I still seek out education to keep my skills and business fresh! I believe we should never stop learning. And I certainly practice what I preach! 3 Types of Photography Education Conferences A great way to meet and connect with lots of people and possibly attend a trade show. My first photography conference was WPPI. It was HUGE, but I was able to sign-up for some smaller, more intimate classes where I received more hands-on training. I was able to go to the trade show and see all the products I offer my clients up close plus learn about new ones. It was an eye opening experience. Smaller conferences are such a great experience... The Baby Summit, Reset, Elevate and Photo Native are a few I’ve attended. Smaller classes, better access to speakers and so much more! I personally prefer the smaller conferences (under 200 people). I have met life long photog friends at these smaller conferences and gained so much knowledge. Retreats + Masterminds Retreats are typically 2-3 days and include education and shooting opportunities. I’ve attended two retreats that included mastermind education, too (Love Soaked with Brooke Schultz and Root to Rise with Sabrina Gebhardt - use code NATASHAS for a discount on the summer/fall run). Both of these retreats also included Masterminds that lasted anywhere from 4-6 months. It was a GREAT way to be held accountable and continue to grow!... --- - Published: 2023-04-07 - Modified: 2023-06-20 - URL: https://npsphotography.com/blog/reasons-outdoor-spring-sessions-arent-for-me/ - Categories: DC, Blog, DC family photography, DC Newborn Photography It ain't easy shooting green and other reasons outdoor spring sessions aren't for me! I do have favorites! It’s no secret the outdoor photo sessions aren’t my top choice. As an in-home lifestyle photographer in Washington DC, I love shooting, well, yes, in-home. But shooting outdoors in the springtime is particularly high on my list of no-gos.   Why?   It Ain't Easy Shooting Green One reason tops the list and that’s the color GREEN. Green grass, as many photographers know, is one of the worst and most challenging of all things to photograph and edit. To add insult to injury, new grass in the springtime is, like, the green of all greens. Think Elphaba green - shout out to my fellow Wicked fans - and it’s not pretty.   Too Many People Another reason makes the anti-spring list, and that’s CROWDS. Washington, DC is one of the prettiest places you can be in the springtime, and many people know this to be true. Because of this, however, the crowds can be unbearable. Nearly every public place in the capitol is riddled with people looking at blooms, having their pictures taken and simply enjoying the spring weather. For a photographer, trying to avoid throngs of people and make sure your pictures don’t have strangers in the background is a huge challenge. But for you and your family, it’s just as maddening. So many people in such proximity is a huge distraction to your kids and adults almost never like to feel on display.   Weather Whiplash Reason number three is WEATHER. While many things... --- > Whether you are just starting out as a photographer or you are well established but looking to uplevel - the tools I use to run my business can help you! - Published: 2023-04-05 - Modified: 2024-06-10 - URL: https://npsphotography.com/blog/7-great-tools-i-use-to-run-my-business/ - Categories: Business, Blog Whether you are just starting out as a photographer or you are well established but looking to uplevel - the tools I use to run my business can help you! Trust. Trust guarantees greatness at your session. They say trust is the foundation of any good relationship and without it, you have nothing. So it may come as no surprise that what I need most from you at your Washington, DC in-home newborn or family session is exactly that: TRUST.   Why trust NPS Photography? I’ve documented families for more than 10 years. And in that time, I’ve photographed more people than I can count. I invest in continuing education to evolve and grow my skill set year after year. And, let’s face it, you booked me for a reason. Maybe you found me on Google and loved my work, or were referred by a trusted friend. All this to say, I know what I’m doing. And if you can trust in the process - trust in me - your session AND the keepsake photos that follow will be among your cherished memories forever.   The Foundation of a Family Session But, let’s drill down a bit more on exactly why trust is so important and why you should not hesitate to have trust in me.   Light Firstly, light. I know how to find it, where to position you within it, and how to utilize it so that you and your people look your best. It may not be where you think it is, and where I lead may surprise you. Let me find it anyway, and just lean into the process.   Posing If you’re familiar with my work, you know that I’m not big... --- - Published: 2023-02-25 - Modified: 2023-08-06 - URL: https://npsphotography.com/blog/the-most-frequently-asked-questions-about-newborn-sessions-answered-washington-dc-newborn-photographer/ - Categories: DC, Blog, DC Newborn Photography, In-Home Newborn Photography - Tags: Alexandria baby photographer, arlington baby photographer, chevy chase baby photographer, dc baby photographer, dc metro area lifestyle photography, dc newborn lifestyle photographer I've literally been asked everything! Your Frequently Asked Questions About Newborn Sessions! Q: Can my newborn session take place in a studio with props? A: No. I specialize in lifestyle-driven, in-home newborn sessions. Photographing families in their homes where memories are made is what makes me tick. ALL furry friends are welcome to join in! They’re a part of your family after all.   Q: How do we schedule our newborn session date? A: Newborn sessions take place between 2-10 weeks after the baby is born. While this timetable isn’t nearly as stringent as a studio newborn session, I do recommend getting your due date on my calendar before your baby arrives. And when you’re making an investment in family photos, you certainly want to make sure you choose wisely. While it’s tempting to jump up and down and say “pick me, pick me! ” the truth of the matter is, I want you to pick the photographer that you - no pun intended - click with. If that’s me, nobody will be more elated. But there is an essential list of things to consider when choosing your family photographer.   The Essential Checklist: How to Choose the Right Photographer Indoor, studio or in-home photos? The first is to consider your preferred setting; where you see your photos being done. This is really a personal preference, but please know that when you choose me we will be doing most of the session in your home with an opportunity to utilize your porch or backyard, too. Posed or natural photos? If you have looked on my website or scrolled my Instagram account, you know I prefer natural photos. But there is certainly a time and place for posed, everyone-looking-at-the-camera pictures. I always try to get one picture with everyone looking at the camera (I affectionately refer to this as the “Grandma shot” because, you guessed it, these are always her favorite ones), but that isn’t my goal at your session. What to Expect During Your Newborn Session When potential clients inquire about a Washington, DC in-home newborn session with me, the first questions are usually about things like what to wear, how to prep your home ready, or how long it might take to get your photos back after the session. But, do you want to know the real experience, the nitty gritty, the actual day-of newborn session flow?   Here’s everything you should know! I’ll knock on your door, all masked up. With brand new babies in the mix, yes, I am still masking for ALL in-home newborn sessions. One word...preparation. Preparation is Key to DC Newborn Photography As much as I’d love to give the impression that I simply roll up to a client’s home on session day without a care in the world, if I *do* appear that way, there’s a reason: Preparation.   No, it’s not glamorous, but preparing for each in home newborn and family session with my clients in the greater Washington, DC area is a key piece of the process. You may even say it’s the secret sauce. The only difference is, I’m not interested in keeping secrets. Here’s what I do to prep for your photo session. Equipment Check Without the equipment, we won’t have a session, so first thing’s first: I check my cameras and make sure the batteries are charged and ready to go. Then I clean off my lenses and get an empty memory card plus back-up for the session.   Study up on your Family All of my clients receive a questionnaire upon booking, which is filled with questions about you and your family. I always read this upon receipt, and I make sure to read it again before the session so that anything I need to know about you and your people will be top of mind. Then I open up my trusty pink notebook and write down your names and children’s ages (pets included! ) and your address.   Location Scouting While I don’t do a pre-session drive-by, I do plug your address into my Waze app so... --- - Published: 2023-01-29 - Modified: 2023-06-20 - URL: https://npsphotography.com/blog/you-want-a-sunrise-sessions-at-the-lincoln-memorial-trust-me/ - Categories: Blog - Tags: DC Family Photos, dc metro area lifestyle photography, Washington DC Family Photographer, washington dc newborn photographer, Washington DC Photographer I specialize in in-home photography, but I do make an exception for sunrise sessions at the Lincoln Memorial and here's why! Sunrise Sessions are the Bomb! If you've spent any time looking over my website or my Instagram account, you might have noticed I don't show many outdoor sessions. It's no secret - I LOVE an in-home sessions and that's mainly what I shoot! But, there is one type of outdoor session I love... sunrise sessions by the Reflecting Pool and Lincoln Memorial*. The light is always gorgeous and there is something so serene about sessions there. Plus, the white marble makes it feel like an indoor session in some way. Sunrise can be early... especially in the summer, but in the fall it's not crazy early and we just might get some colorful leaves, too. So, I recommend fall or early spring for your Lincoln Memorial Session. It's also a good way to avoid the heat or freezing temps! Session Flow We usually start on the edge on the Reflecting Pool... always careful not to let kiddos get too close! Happy to report no one has gone for a swim at one of my sessions Then, we move to some steps. I usually mix it up - some with the Lincoln Memorial behind you and/or some pretty trees and greenery. This gives you some variety and some pictures that are less "DC". Now comes the fun part! We climb the steps to one of the sides and that's where the magic happens in my opinion! It is just such a breathtaking spot. At the end of the session, we walk... --- - Published: 2023-01-27 - Modified: 2025-03-11 - URL: https://npsphotography.com/blog/how-to-get-your-partner-on-board-for-dc-in-home-family-photos/ - Categories: DC, Blog, DC Newborn Photography, In-Home Newborn Photography - Tags: dc baby photographer, DC Family Photos, dc newborn lifestyle photographer, Washington DC Family Photographer, Washington DC Photographer Let me guess - your spouse isn't a fan of photos sessions? I know they dread you being frantic (although there is NO reason for you to be! ) and the kids melting down (this, too, is 100% normal! ). It’s also highly likely that their attitude about the session is behind some of the anxiousness you might be feeling about everything, too.   The Key Is Preparation But, do you know the best way to keep some of this reluctance and overall grumpiness about the experience at bay?   Preparation.   A little prep with your hubby goes a long way in making the experience smoother for everyone. Newborn and Family Photographer NPS Photography Celebrates a Major Milestone this January The start of a new year is always prime time for reflection and even more so this month than most. Why, you might ask? Because this January marks 10 years of NPS Photography! This milestone is prompting me to take a walk down memory lane and share a bit more about the journey I’ve taken with my business in its first decade.   my boys in 2011! Humble Beginnings Those of you that know a little about me know about my love of kids and my years of experience working with children. I started my professional career as a teacher and then switched to stay-at-home-mom status for years while my three boys were young. As a military wife, it made sense to be more hands on at home for those years. But when my husband, Mark, was deployed to Afghanistan in 2010 and early 2011, I needed a positive distraction and that’s when I started to pick up my camera more and more. I learned to shoot in manual mode and slowly but surely began practicing my skills on my children, my friends’ children and then full families before long. Guaranteeing Greatness at Your Photo Session As a Washington, DC newborn and family photographer, I’ve photographed more sessions than I can count. They’re all pretty fantastic – I continue to do this 10 years in, after all! - but what brings a good photo session to great?   As you might imagine, I’ve given this topic a lot of thought. Here are the factors that pretty much guarantee greatness at your next family photo session. Trust You trusting me, my vision and how I bring that all to life is an essential ingredient in a great photo session. I prep my sessions by doing sketches of “poses” and interactions, and then I utilize a series of games, prompts and encouragements when I’m with families to bring that vision to life. It may not make sense to you, or feel familiar (there will be no saying “cheese” or stiffly staring into my camera), but trust me. I’ve got this, and I’ve got you. If you know and trust that, all will be well, and you’ll love your pictures. Just Keep Smiling, Just Keep Smiling Kids will be kids, babies will be babies and, let’s face it... husbands may also be husbands. That I can do! My 2023 Word of the Year! Resolution or Word? Over the years, I’ve done it all... resolutions, no resolutions and word of the year. And I’ll be honest, resolutions and I don’t have a great track record. In fact, I’m pretty sure I’ve never even made it past January with a resolution. But a word of the year? Well, we are a perfect fit! A word of the year is a positive - there is really no way to fail. Resolutions are so easy to “fail” or not see through. Some of PAST WORDS: 2020 - Graceful 2021 - Bold 2022 - Nurture My 2023 Word of the Year And drumroll please... My 2023 word of the year is... C O N N E C T And by connect, I plan to disconnect more from social media and my computer. And be more intentional with my time “online”. I plan to connect more with family, friends, my clients, other entrepreneurs/small businesses, and my community. I want to connect in-person! I always love seeing how my word of the year takes shape throughout the year. I try to be very intentional about it. I have it written in my gratitude journal and with my 2023 goals. So, I see it every single day. I will make a conscious effort to C O N N E C T in every way possible throughout 2023. Yes, that may include online connections, but that’s not my focus. But, I'm sharing mine because it shows how I'm the perfect photographer to handle kids! I Have Experience While I’ve been a photographer for almost 10 years, I’ve had many jobs in my lifetime that have led to me being the Washington, DC newborn and family photographer I am today. I’ve always loved kids - even as a kid - and ALL of my jobs leading up to NPS Photography involve working with littles. I thrive when playing with kids, teaching them and spending time with them - I was just born with that nurture gene. My Work History So what jobs have I had that contribute to my love of photographing babies and young kids? #1. The first job I had, at age 11, was babysitting. Yes, you read that right. I was 11 years old. While I’m not even sure that is legal today, it was the ‘80s, baby, and I was a sitter in high demand.   #2. As an older teen, I was nanny to four kids under 8 for two consecutive summers. I took care of everything for these kids, from transportation to snack and meal prep to planning - and cruise directing - fun activities and events for them for each day and week.   #3. Every Sunday for three years running, I worked as a Sunday School Nursery worker at Christ Church in Georgetown. What a blessing it was to spend time with all of those itty bitty babies while their moms and dads attended church services. And it probably goes without saying that it set me up... --- > The DMV area is BIG! Here are the regions I serve in the Washington DC area. The DC Area is BIG If you’ve been hanging out here for awhile, you know that for years, I split my time - both personally and professionally - between North Carolina and Washington, D. C. But in May 2022, my husband and I made the switch to full time life in D. C. and we couldn’t be more thrilled. This move allows me to provide lifestyle photography for newborns and families, on a now full-time basis, in the D. C. metro area.   Now I know what you're thinking, but everyone says they live in DC even if it's really Maryland or Virginia. And that is SO true! I grew-up in Bethesda, Maryland, but always tell people who ask where I'm from that I grew-up in DC! The DMV - an abbreviation for the region including the District of Columbia, parts of Maryland and Virginia - is one of the most populated regions in the country. It contains tons of suburban towns (and the adorable families that fill them) and spans a pretty large area. As much as I’d love to serve each and every square inch of the DC metro region, I have to be upfront in saying that I prefer to fill my time taking pictures... not battling traffic. That’s one of the main reasons why I limit the areas I work within.   Where I DO Shoot: Regions Served in the Washington D. C. For moms, dads, kids and photographers! And my unpopular opinion makes fall less stressful - skip the DC fall photos! ** Cue the music ** It’s the most cha-ot-ic time of the year... Fall for photographers, my friend, is what the holiday season is to retailers or April is for CPAs. In other words, it’s completely frenetic and that time of year when my calendar is totally full. Am I thankful beyond measure? Absolutely. But do I understand where the fall photo session rush started? Absolutely not. In fact, I write today to tell you that winter, spring and summer are regularly overlooked and truly GREAT times for pictures.   Top 5 Reasons to Skip DC Fall Family Photos Here are my top 5 reasons to skip fall and choose literally any other season for your family photos: 1. Fall is a busy season for everyone. It’s back to school, back to a sports and extracurricular schedule, and there are a boatload of holidays to celebrate in a very short window of time. Why add the stress of yet another thing on the calendar to your plate? 2. If you have kids in school or daycare - you’re already getting fall photos of them! Need I say more? 3. In-home sessions can be done no matter what the weather is like outside. A few backyard or porch snaps are usually doable in almost any weather, too. This takes allllll the worry out of tracking for weather, layering up and even footwear. And I think we could all use a few less things to worry about!   4. It's a love letter to my DC clients! I wrote a love letter and it wasn't to my husband... gasp! No, I wanted to write a little love note to you. My DC clients. Because you're the real MVPs in my business. When I first started my business in 2013 – mainly because my “little” hobby was becoming pricey and doing pictures for free was getting old – I had no idea that I would still be in business almost 10 years later! I wanted something to do once my boys were in school full time and volunteering at their schools wasn't really a full-time thing. Although, I did enjoy it! I fell into newborn photography simply because I said “YES! ” to someone who inquired about newborn pictures. And it was because of this client (who I went on to do numerous sessions for over a three year span before they moved away) that I found what really made my heart sing.  Capturing families with their new additions.  I owe everything to this client. And through educating myself to become a better photographer and business owner (who knew running a small business was so much business;) I honed my craft, evolved it and met all my photography besties! Weekdays are where it's at! You’re busy. Your partner/spouse is also busy. Throw in some kids and their schedules and I get it, you are BEYOND busy! Life is, at times, a total rat race. And I know a slower pace is what most of us yearn for. Can I get an AMEN! ? ! But, really, time is precious and fleeting. We go back and forth between wanting it to stand still and speed up so we can get onto the next thing. And for all these reasons, I'm changing things up in 2023 and asking my clients to go with it! Why the change? We take off work or school to go to the doctor or dentist or a vacation. And while a vacation is filled with amazing memories, let’s just say the doctor and dentist are not! Now, we don’t do this on a regular basis. Maybe just a few times a year, right? So, what I’m proposing is just ONE morning (and it’s actually not even a full morning) stay home and have family pictures done. Right at home! And to be honest, these can be done in the summer or when you’re littles have a day off school. I could literally write a BOOK on why in-home sessions are the way to go, but instead of doing that here – go read what I have to say HERE. I value your time and what I’m asking is for you to value mine, too. The work... --- > There are A LOT photographers out there in the DC area! Life is full of choices, and when you are about to bring home a brand new baby, or photograph your sweet young family in your home for the first time – choosing the right photographer can be a daunting task. There are lots of options - great ones, I’d argue. So, of all the fish in the photography sea - why NPS Photography? I'm breaking down to top 5 reasons to choose NPS! Top Five Reasons to Choose NPS Photography #1. EXPERIENCE I just passed a milestone birthday a few short weeks ago (nifty and fifty! ) and I'm at the point in life where I’ve earned a combination of experience and confidence. I’m the mom of three grown kids, and have lived/mothered/survived through so many stages of parenthood, and when I say I’ve seen it all... well, let’s just leave it there. :) I’ve been in business for 10 years, photographing families just like yours. And, if you follow me on social media you know that I’m a bit of an education junkie. I love to learn, and love to bring those new skills and offerings to my clients even more.   #2. STYLE I bring a special brand of style to the table. My images are light and bright, with color, depth and a crispness you don’t always see in lifestyle imagery. A quick peek through my website will show you my approach to light, color and final product. I also work closely with my clients before the... --- > You are no longer expecting, but you are getting ready for your newborn session! Here's what to expect AND what not expect at your DC Newborn Session! All the Expectations As a mama to a brand new baby, I know your worries are many. If you’ve planned a newborn session, I know the pressure of getting ready for that is another thing to add to the list. However, as a Washington, DC based newborn photographer with almost 10 years of experience under my belt, I want you to know that it’s going to be just fine. More than fine, actually. But just to help provide clarity and calm, I've prepared a list of what to expect (and not to expect) when you’re no longer expecting a BABY... but a newborn session with me.   What to Expect AND WHat Not to Expect I don’t expect your home to be spotless.  NOT AT ALL. You just had a baby and as a mom of three, I know all about those early days. Your house simply needs to be gently tidied. Dishes should be placed in the sink, not on the counter, bedside tables should be cleared off, and things like breast pumps and baby wipes put away. But spotless-ness is not even remotely necessary and it’s a hard expectation to put on yourself during this time. I do expect your toddler to be a toddler. If you have older children, please remember no toddler (or any child, for that matter) in the history of time has behaved perfectly during a session. Toddlers are still learning, and they’re adjusting to a new family dynamic - so expecting perfect behavior... --- > What if my baby cries during our newborn sessions? They will and I'm to debunk all your newborn session worries! As a new mama, I know you’re a bundle of worries and preparing for a newborn session is a big endeavor with such a little one at home. As a mom of three, former teacher, and nearly 10 years photographing newborns under my belt, I’ve heard lots of worries and one I always hear is: What should I do if my baby cries? Friends, I’m here to tell you that all babies cry. Yes, even the “good” babies (all babies are good! ) And yes, it can and probably *will* happen at your session. I’m not only here to tell you that it’s no big deal, but that there are plenty of things we can do to minimize the misery and help keep your little one happy. My favorite no-to-low-fuss tricks of the trade: Feed them and burp them. Some babies need to be fed several times during their session. Cluster feeding is a thing and your session isn’t the time to worry about schedules. Food makes everyone happy, sometimes even more so when it’s on demand. I think even adults can relate to this! Change their diaper. All babies like having a clean diaper and sometimes in the rush of preparing the whole family for a session, baby isn’t changed as often as usual. This is another go-to move, and a great opportunity to connect mid-session as well. Swaddle them. Babies just love the cocoon of a good swaddle. I recommend having a neutral swaddle nearby - it will... --- - Published: 2022-09-30 - Modified: 2025-06-30 - URL: https://npsphotography.com/blog/dc-area-moms-photography-list-nps-photography/ - Categories: DC, Blog, DC family photography, DC Newborn Photography As a mom, you are always looking for local resources. The Number One Thing I Hear at In-Home DC Sessions In my ten years of photographing families, I’ve heard and seen a lot of things. But do you want to know what I hear the most during my sessions? “I’m sorry! ” If that wasn’t what you were expecting, well, me neither! Yet, I hear this multiple times at every session. I want to remind you that I’m your photographer and I’m here to capture the best of you – but you’re human, you’re busy, you’re juggling babies and small children and jobs and I don’t expect perfection. Not even close, because that’s not human, and it’s certainly not reality! So, please, if you hear nothing as you prepare for a session with me, hear this: You DON’T need to apologize! Think Before You Apologize for One of These Things Please no apologies for: Your kids’ behavior. Friends. You have just brought home a new baby. You’ve put your children in new clothes that may or may not be super comfortable. You’ve let me in the house, and I’m new and novel to them. All of these factors can be fun, and please know I’ll make it so, but also a bit overwhelming for tiny humans. And although I’m not here to give you a fashion makeover, I am here to help you look your absolute BEST for your in-home session. As an in-home lifestyle photographer, I’ve photographed a LOT of families and I’ve observed a thing or two about what you can definitely avoid in terms of wardrobe selection. Especially at home. Please avoid... Here’s my comprehensive guide of what not to wear for your in-home portrait session: X Shoes and socks. I mean, do you really wear shoes around your home? I don’t think so... so, please don't wear them for your session. This goes for dads, too! I can promise your feet won’t be the center of attention in any of your pictures! Ok, maybe your baby’s feet will, but not yours. X Matchy matchy Nope! Don’t do it! I recommend coordinating instead – choosing complimentary colors and shades that play well off each other, but aren’t identical. The end result looks effortlessly chic. X Athletic wear Anything made out of dri-fit, athletic fabric - yes, even if it’s collared golf shirt - is a no go. It might be country club-approved, but it’s also shiny and doesn’t photograph well. Trust me on this. X BIG logos Branding has no place in your family photos. That means that logoed shirts are discouraged. DC at-home summer photo sessions are where it's at! Let’s Keep it Cool! On the heels of one of the most intense heat waves in recent memory, I’m coming at you with what might be some unexpected photography wisdom.   Summer sessions are the best.   Yes, you read that right.   6 Reasons At-home DC Summer Sessions are Best! Why book a summer session, you ask? For SO many reasons! First, if you’ve been following me for any length of time, you know that at-home sessions are my sweet spot. Of course, a summer session at home is best for the most obvious of reasons: A/C! That’s not to say we can’t take a few pics on your front porch or backyard, but no one has to spend an hour outside in this heat and that’s a BIG win! Summer is so relaxed and carefree. Having longer days with less on the schedule makes everyone calmer, more relaxed and carefree for pictures. We all even look our best with that sweet summer sun-kissed look on our hair and cheeks. The light! Summer light is so pretty and, again, where the days are so much longer, there are so many more options for scheduling your session. Ease of booking. My fall calendar gets BUSY (in fact there are only a handful of sessions left)! Fall is to photographers what April is to CPAs, so get on the calendar early for the best options. I can promise you won’t regret being ahead of the curve. Make your pictures stand out!... --- - Published: 2022-08-04 - Modified: 2023-09-23 - URL: https://npsphotography.com/blog/watch-me-grow-a-year-of-sessions-for-your-new-addition/ - Categories: Blog, Bethesda, Chevy Chase, In-Home Family Photography, In-Home Newborn Photography - Tags: Alexandria baby photographer, arlington baby photographer, dc baby photographer, Washington DC Family Photographer, Washington DC Photographer You had your newborn sessions and in a blink your baby is sitting and getting teeth! That means you’re ready for an upgrade! The Watch Me Grow package is the perfect way to capture that first year. Newborn Sessions and Beyond You’re expecting! Congratulations! ! ! I’m super excited you reached out me. In an effort to not totally overwhelm you, I try and keep things simple. I simply respond with my newborn info and a link to schedule a phone consult with me. Yes, I want to chat with you and answer all your questions before you book! But, sometimes I get an inquiry that asks for the works! They want all the info on newborn, six months and a one year session from the get-go. And I’m always happy to send you all the info about the Watch Me Grow upgrade! Why Watch Me Grow? I know you’ve heard this before, “You blink and they’re one! ” And I know when you’re in the thick of things, sleep deprived and trying to juggle all the things, this is one of the most annoying thing to hear! It’s a year, of course it goes by fast, but it’s also the slowest year ever. But, I will say that your new addition changes the most in this first year. They go from being totally dependent on you for absolutely everything to walking, talking and feeding themselves! That’s a lot of growth! Now, not all one year olds are doing all those things, but I promise you the change in that year is nothing short of amazing. What is a Watch Me Grow Package? You might be wondering why I’m giving Broadway reviews if I’m a photographer... and I completely understand! But I’m also a HUGE Broadway fan. Some might even say I’m a junkie! So, I thought I’d share all the goodness I’ve seen in the past 6 months with you! Afterall, I’ve taken two trips to NYC and also have The Kennedy Center literally in my backyard. How it started! You might say I’ve always loved the stage. Performing and watching. I organized a little neighborhood crew when I was little and we put on Sleeping Beauty and Snow White right in my childhood dining room. I even sold tickets to the show! Or maybe it started when “Annie” opened at the Kennedy Center in 1977. I saw it SIX times! I pretty much begged anyone and everyone who had a ticket to take me! Then, I acted in middle school and high school, as well as, did some behind the scenes work – I was a fabulous stage manager! So, you might say I’ve always loved the live theater. 2020 & 2021 were hard on Theater Lovers I had season tickets to DPAC for 5 years. But mid-2020 season DPAC like all theaters closed its doors. Cue all the tears. And then we waited for the theater to re-open... and waited... and waited. My 2020 tickets were moved not once, but three times! I finally saw “The Band’s Visit” in October 2021! WRONG! Over the past 9.5 years I have niched down – read all about it here! But photographers photograph everything! You’ll likely hear - and see - a lot of what I do photograph here on my website and over on Instagram - I have to show my work to get hired, after all - but I wanted to spend a moment talking about what I won’t photograph. Contrary to popular belief, while I do know how to use a camera (pretty well if I do say so myself), I’ve chosen to niche down and specialize in the photography that makes my heart sing! When you first start out as a photographer, you take ALL the jobs. And that has its place. You’re trying to build a business and find the things that really make you happy. Through doing so, you learn some important lessons, the biggest of which is, you learn what you love and what you don’t! It’s some trial and error as you can imagine! But there are some sessions you dread (and you know to kick those to the curb) and there are some sessions that you can’t wait to edit and light you up! What I won’t photograph! Here are five types of sessions you won’t see me capturing. I won’t do cake smashes, but I will do a family session with a focus on the one year old. Not us! It’s the newborn and here’s why we let them rule the roost! Who’s the real boss? As a mom and head of your household, you’re used to leading the pack. And I’m sure you expect that I, as your photographer, will also be commanding the crew. But when it comes to your newborn session, who’s in charge might not be who you think. It’s not you, mom, and - while I come in with lots of experience at the ready - it’s not even me. The BABY is boss at photo time.  Hear me out. Newborns are unpredictable, still very much getting the hang of their preferred routine and the most important thing you and I can do during your newborn session is go with it.  Luckily, I have compiled my five top tips on how to roll with whatever punches baby has in store that day.   All the Baby Tips1. Follow their cues. You know your baby best. If they need to eat, feed them. If they’re wet or a blowout has been had, let’s pause to change that diaper (and possibly outfit! ). If they need some snuggles, snuggle away, or rock and burp them. It doesn’t feel like it now, but it goes SO fast, and soon, your baby will be mobile and won’t want to be coddled in the same ways. So trust me, if baby needs something, just tend to their needs. And I’ll make sure you have photographs of these moments that you’ll always cherish.  2.
