The Most Frequently Asked Questions About Newborn Sessions…Answered!

Frequently asked questions about newborn sessions NPS Photography 008 - NPS Photography

All the Newborn Questions

As a Washington DC newborn photographer with more than 10 years of experience, I’ve fielded questions about sessions from a lot of families. Because I know that it’s helpful to get as informed as possible when you start researching newborn photographers, I wanted to share my most frequently asked questions – and answers! – with you.

Your Frequently Asked Questions About Newborn Sessions!

Q: Can my newborn session take place in a studio with props?

A: No. I specialize in lifestyle-driven, in-home newborn sessions. Photographing families in their homes where memories are made is what makes me tick. If a themed, in-studio newborn session is more your speed, I’d be happy to recommend other photographers who specialize in that sort of thing!

Q: Can my pet be in the pictures?

A: YES!  ALL furry friends are welcome to join in! They’re a part of your family after all.

Q: How do we schedule our newborn session date?

A: Newborn sessions take place between 2-10 weeks after the baby is born. While this timetable isn’t nearly as stringent as a studio newborn session, I do recommend getting your due date on my calendar before your baby arrives. I have a limited number of newborn sessions each month. Click here to read more DC newborn photography FAQs.

Once we do so, I simply ask you to contact me once you’re home from the hospital and we will schedule the session date. Babies come early and late and sometimes moms want a bit more recovery time. This gives you that flexibility!

Q: What should we wear?

A: I provide you with everything you need to look your best in the session planning prep, including Tips on What to Wear in my Session Guide, links to my Pinterest boards and my Session Prep Guide which has all the tips!

Q: What’s the total cost of a newborn session?

A: You pay a session fee upfront to reserve your session and get your due date on my calendar. After you’ve viewed all of your images in a slideshow, you choose a collection that includes some or all of your digital images and a product credit. So while the total cost varies, clients typically spend between $995-1600.

Q: How long are newborn sessions?

A: Newborn sessions are about an hour long. Sometimes they are longer if the baby is hungry or needs a change during the session. If that’s the case, we go with the flow!

Q: We have a tiny apartment with no nursery. Will that work for a newborn session?

A: YES!  You don’t need a big home or a dedicated nursery.  We just need some natural light! I’ll find the perfect spots in your home – that’s my job.

Q: Can we skip the collection and just buy the digital images?

A: The short answer is no. You are under no obligation to use your product credit, but I am not able to give you a discount on your selected Collection if you don’t want to use it. Your product credit is baked into the price of your Collection and has no cash value. If you truly don’t think you want print products, you can always purchase your slideshow, more digital images, or prints as gifts for family members. I’ve even had clients gift the credit to grandparents!

But, once you see my heirloom products, I’m confident you are going to want to use the product credit! My most popular products are albums and deckled edge prints.

Have Additional Questions?

These may be the questions I field the most, but I love hearing from expecting moms! I’d love to set-up a time to chat and answer all your questions! (Yes, chat on the actual phone!)
